TBG14 - Business Process Group
Introduction
This note describes the role and purpose of TBG14 and it’s contribution
to the work of UN/CEFACT. It builds on the earlier ideas from BPAWG and
the Terms of Reference and work plan for TBG14.
The vision
To simplify, streamline and standardise functional business processes
through the use of value chain principles and structured analysis. In
carrying out this work TBG14 will support the UN/CEFACT mission to
“facilitate international transactions through the simplification and
harmonisation of procedures and information flows, and so contribute to
the growth of global commerce.
The approach
TBG14 will adopt the methodology (UMM) as the approach to the analysis
of business processes. It will use UML modelling tools to carry out the
work.
It will develop and publish a model of the International Supply Chain
working with the domain groups within TBG. This process will include
harmonisation and integration of the models developed within the
individual TBG’s as well as those of other standards and industry
organisations (i.e. IATA, GS1, SWIFT, UBL , WCO, …) into a reference
model that will be consistent and that will encompass the scope of the
work within UN/CEFACT. It will link up a “Top Down” view of the whole
Supply Chain with the detailed functional processes identified by the
expert groups.
The “best practice” processes used in international supply chain will be identified and modelled.
The model will also be used to reflect the international trade
processes, relating the detailed message structures within UNeDocs to
the business entities and information envelopes within the model.
All business processes included those used within International Trade
will be identified and formally described, and made available for
re-use by their inclusion in the UN/CEFACT Registry.
To enable this to be achieved it will be necessary to commence to standardise various artefacts:
- the naming of Business Processes and their descriptions
- the classification scheme for Business Processes to aid their discovery and use
- the names and definitions of Roles of the Business Partners
- the states of the Business Entities affected by the processes
In turn these standard values will provide the values for some of the
“Contexts” required within the Core Components Technical Specification.
